SAT vs ACT: A Guide for UK Students Applying to the US

By the Bright Sprouts Academy teaching team · Updated October 2026

Quick answer

US universities accept the SAT and the ACT equally. The digital SAT has two sections (Reading & Writing, and Maths), is scored from 400 to 1600 and adapts its difficulty to the student. The ACT is scored from 1 to 36. Since 2025 its composite score is based on English, Maths and Reading, and Science is optional. Students who work quickly and like direct questions often prefer the ACT; students who prefer fewer, more reasoning-heavy questions often prefer the SAT. A timed diagnostic test of each is the best way to decide.

Do UK students need the SAT or ACT?

For UK universities, generally no: A-Levels, the IB or equivalent qualifications are what count. Students following an American curriculum may be asked for SAT or ACT scores alongside APs.

For US universities, many highly selective institutions have brought back testing requirements after the test-optional period. Even where testing is optional, a strong score can help an international application. Check each university's current testing policy.

How to choose

  • Take a full, timed practice test of each under realistic conditions.
  • Compare the results using the official concordance tables, not just your impression of each test.
  • Consider pacing: if you run out of time on the ACT, the SAT may suit you better.
  • Choose one test and prepare properly for it. Preparing for both at once is rarely efficient.
